Design of Three Dimensional Soft Sensors with Porous Materials

Designing Nishijin Textiles with Functional Materials based on Traditional Techniques and Their Installations

Design and commercialize new experiences to carry and control scents

Electron transfer across proteins plays an important role in many biological processes, including those relevant for the conversion of solar photons to chemical energy. Previous studies demonstrated the generation of photocurrents upon light irradiation in a number of photoactive proteins, such as photosystem I or bacteriorhodopsin. Here, it is shown that Sn-cytochrome c layers act as reversible and efficient photoelectrochemical switches upon integration into large-area solid-state junctions. Photocurrents are observed both in the Soret band (λ = 405 nm) and in the Q band (λ = 535 nm), with current on/off ratios reaching values of up to 25. The underlying modulation in charge-transfer rate is attributed to a hole-transport channel created by the photoexcitation of the Sn-porphyrin.

Tangible Modeling Method for Faster Rapid Prototyping

Abstract In this paper we discuss the development of a novel rapid prototyping method that makes the process of creating tangible electronic artefacts faster and easier. This method makes use of a new paper-like material that can be given any form just by hand or by using other stationary objects. This material changes its stiffness and becomes harder soon after the modeling process. Furthermore, this material can be integrated within electronic circuits using magnetic connectors and silver. The discussed method has been conceptualized using a People-Centered Design approach while its implementation has been led by an engineering approach. Both, the conceptualization process as well as the implementation of the discussed rapid prototyping method have been detailed in this paper along with example scenarios where the said implementation could be useful.

Control of Autonomous Swelling-Deswelling Behavior for a Polymer Gel

We succeeded in the wide-range control of the period for the swelling-deswelling self-oscillation of a novel polymer gel by selection of the initial concentration of the Belouzov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) substrates and the temperature. The novel polymer gel was composed of a non-thermoresponsive and biocompatible poly(vi- nylpyrrolidone) (PVP) main chain covalently bonded to the ruthenium catalyst for the BZ reaction. In this study, we clarified the influence of the initial concentration of the BZ substrates and the temperature on the period and the self-oscillating behavior. By optimizing the initial concentration of the BZ substrates, we caused the swelling-deswelling self-oscillation in 0.5 Hz. The maximum frequency (0.5 Hz) of the novel gel was 20 times as large as that for the conventional-type self-oscillating gel. Moreover, we showed that the displacement of the self-oscillation for the gel has a tradeoff relationship against the period of the self- oscillation.

Workshop to make moving pictures using DEA

Ars Electronica in the Knowledge capital “力と動き展”などで実施されました.

Entirely Soft Sensing and Actuation Modules for Programming Shape Changes through Tangible Interaction

A Stiffness-Controlled Surface for Size- and Shape-Changing Interfaces

We propose a new system called xSlate, a stiffness controlled surface for shape changing interfaces. It is enabled by a deformable frame structure that consists of linear actuators, and an elastic skin surface that can configure its stiffness by pneumatic jamming. We have implemented the prototype and explored its applications.

Fabricating Objects Expanding and Changing Shape with Heat
ExpandFab is a fabrication method for creating expanding objects using foam materials. The printed objects change their shape and volume, which is advantageous for reducing the printing time and transportation costs. For the fabrication of expanding objects, we investigated a basic principle of the expansion rate and developed materials by mixing a foam powder and elastic adhesive. Furthermore, we developed a fabrication method using the foam materials. A user can design expanded objects using our design software and sets the expansion areas on the surface.
